ZURICH: Brazil was awarded the 2014 World Cup on Tuesday, the first time since 1950 that the privilege has been bestowed on the country that calls itself “the land of the football boot.” Brazil, which was the only candidate, has won the World Cup a record five times. “The executive committee has decided unanimously to give the responsibility, not only the right, but the responsibility to organise FIFA’s World Cup 2014 to the country Brazil,” FIFA President Sepp Blatter said. Blatter then handed the World Cup Trophy to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who flew in for the event. Women’s WCGermany was awarded the 2011 Women’s World Cup by FIFA on Tuesday. Germany, which has won the last two World Cup titles, beat Canada in the decision to host the next women’s soccer tournament. “The organiser of FIFA’s Women’s World Cup of 2011 is the football association of Deutschland,” FIFA President Sepp Blatter said. In its final presentation earlier on Tuesday, Germany listed 11 reasons it should stage the event, but mainly sold itself as “the land of football.” “Of course we are very proud and grateful for this distinction to be able after the World Cup of the men in 2006 to already in the year 2011 to be able to organise the Women’s World Cup,” German soccer federation President Theo Zwanziger said. “Women’s football is a great development opportunity around the world,” Zwanziger added. “The ball finally is also there for the girls and the women.” — AP
