‘Breakthrough in blasts case soon’

HYDERABAD: M.A. Basith, who retired on attaining the age of superannuation as the Director-General of Police, said investigation into the bomb blasts in the State capital in recent months has made considerable progress and a breakthrough would be achieved in the “shortest period of time”.

Reviewing the farewell parade by contingents of police before laying down office on Wednesday, Mr. Basith complimented the police force for working tirelessly over extended periods in tracking down the culprits involved in the blasts. The force gave good results, he said.

The former DGP thanked the State Government for responding well to the proposal made by police to increase the strength of the force. Keeping in view recommendations by the National Police Commission and the availability of forces in adjoining Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, a demand of 60,000 additional personnel was projected. However, the Government sanctioned 37,730 personnel of all ranks who were to be recruited over four years.

The bold step taken by the Government on recruitment gave him immense satisfaction.

He was also happy that he could get the medical bill of the force for Rs. nine crore cleared by the Government during his ten-month tenure.

Assumes charge

Later, Sham Sunder Prasad Yadav assumed charge as the DGP from Mr. Basith. He has three years of service left. Reminded by reporters that he overtook two officers senior to him, Mr. Yadav said his appointment was a Government decision. He also said he would be a common man’s DGP.

P.V. Naidu, Principal Secretary, Home, who was superseded by Mr. Yadav for the DGP’ post, was conspicuous by his absence.
