Drawing inspiration from paper pulp

Staff Reporter

Kirthi Chandak’s work on display

PUDUCHERRY: This artist likes to let the paper talk to her… to give her inspiration. The embedded objects in the paper pulp that she pours on a gauze cloth too form part of Kirthi Chandak’s paintings. Her second solo exhibition, on at Sri Aurobindo Ashram’s Exhibition House near Hotel Promenade on Goubert Avenue in Puducherry, will close on November 1.

Seven paper bags held by hands and depicting images of the needs of human beings (both basic and psychological), including food, clothing, shelter and freedom form the installation. “I have used the form of the shopping bag held by a hand to show the feeling of the want to posses.”

“The extreme commercialisation of everything in life, even our basic necessities, is what I want to share with the viewers through this work. And, the dual possibility of the paper pulp medium of being painted on as well as moulded is what has beautifully given shape to this idea,” explains Kirti.

The works at the exhibition were done in the last three years, and they include oil paints on canvas and water colours on Ashram handmade paper pulp.
