ALAPPUZHA: In a daylight robbery in Mavelikara on Wednesday, an unidentified gang attacked a jewellery shop employee and decamped with gold ornaments. Initial estimates put the worth of the gold to be nearly Rs.15 lakh. The incident took place near the Olaketti temple under the Kuruthikadu police station limits in Mavelikara at around 2.30 p.m. According to the police, three men had arrived on a motorbike and posed as customers at the Jewellery. As the lone employee in the shop, Jayachandran, was showing them different varieties of wedding rings, the men reportedly threw chilli powder into his eyes before beating him on the head with a wooden rod. As Jayachandran lay unconscious, the men gathered all the jewellery they could and fled the spot. District Superintendent of Police E.J. Jayaraj, Chengannur Dy.SP B. Ravindra Prasad, Mavelikara circle inspector A. Nasim are investigating the case.
