Vehicles carrying tribals to the venue detained by the police

VIZIANAGARAM: The meeting in memory of two adivasi movement leaders – Kondagorri Manganna and Aarika Koranna was held amidst unprecedented vigilance of police at Agriculture Market Committee yard in Parvathipuram on Wednesday.

The meeting organised by Andhra Pradesh Rythu Coolie Sangam (RCS) to pay homage to the two leaders was attended by B.D. Sarma, former chairman of National SC,ST Commission, S. Jhansi, president of RCS, Gurram Vijayakumar, CPI(M-L) State committee member and others.

The police made every effort to scuttle the meeting. They detained vehicles carrying people to the venue at Duggeru village in Makkuva mandal, Tikkabai, Levidi and Peda Merangi (Kurupam), Cooneru (Komarada) and Parvathipuram outskirts on the plea that travelling by trucks as per norms is illegal.

Ms. Jhansi said that many a number of trucks carrying some 4,000 people were detained at the nearby police stations. In spite of “police zulum” tribals reached the venue in good number, she said.

Speakers at the meeting demanded implementation of the various legislations enacted for the welfare of tribals and stop mining bauxite in Visakhapatnam Agency for the benefit of multi-national companies. The meeting resolved strict implementation of 1/70 Act, restoration of encroached lands in the Agency to tribals and minimum support price for forest produce.
