Big Central project to electrify villages

Staff Reporter

BERHAMPUR: The Central government will provide funds for rural electrification in the districts other than the four taken up under the Rajiv Gandhi Gramin Vidyutkaran Yojna.

This was stated by Union Minister for Power Sushil Kumar Shinde during his discussions with Union Minister of State for Rural Development Chandrasekhar Sahu in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Mr. Sahu held a meeting with Mr. Shinde regarding electrification of extreme remote pockets of rural Orissa. At present the Rajiv Gandhi Gramin Vidyutkaran Yojna was taken up in Ganjam, Gajapati, Anugul and Nayagarh districts of Orissa. In Ganjam district 3,161 villages and 1,512 in Gajapati district would be benefited by the project. In Orissa, the project was being taken up by the National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC). The project was seen as a counter of the UPA government to the Biju Gramin Jyoti Yojna initiated by the Orissa government independently to electrify villages in Orissa.

Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Sahu said the Centre had sanctioned around Rs. 28,000 crores for rural electrification in the country. Mr. Shinde informed Mr. Sahu that funds would also be allocated by the centre for rural electrification projects in 26 districts of the State.
