‘Not only poor citizens but tourists also depend on them’ DEHRA DUN: A group of concerned citizen has expressed concern over disappearance of public taps from many areas of Dehra Dun city. Public taps are a facility not only for the large number of poor citizens who depend on them for their daily needs but also provide much succour to those walking through the area and the tourists -- all of whom may not be from the affluent class that depends on expensive mineral water, say Abha Sharma and Sanjay Joshi. Both have been lobbying hard for establishment of public taps in the once green Doon City that is increasingly being turned into a cement and concrete jungle ever since Uttarakhand was born seven years ago. The activists wondered why the municipal and Jal Sansthan officials had stopped maintaining the few public taps in the old localities. “We do not agree with the official claim that public taps are no longer required as most houses now have water connections. These taps are required by the poor whose right to running water was taken away the moment all the canals in the city were turned underground in the name of road widening and beautification over the past few years,” they say.
