CHANDIGARH: Representatives of several farmers’ organisations on Wednesday honoured Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda as “Kisan Rattan” at his residence here.

These organisations included Bharatiya Kisan Union and its offshoots, Kisan Sangathan, Kisan Bhawan, Panipat, Kisan Sangharsh Samiti and Kisan Khet Mazdoor Congress.

The representatives, accompanied by hundreds of farmers, thanked Mr. Hooda for his efforts which led to the lifting of the ban on export of non-basmati rice and for other decisions taken to safeguard the interests of farmers.

Mr. Hooda said he was aware of the difficulties faced by them as he also belonged to a family of farmers. He asserted that he would always stand for their rights and do his utmost for their welfare.

Cautioning the people against “gimmicks” of Opposition leaders to “mislead them”, he said that soon after returning from his foreign visit recently he had met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi and urged him to lift the ban on export of non-basmati rice.

President of the Bhartiya Kisan Union Haryana unit Ajit Singh Habri said the Kisan unions had always opposed the functioning of the Government since the inception of Haryana in 1966 and it was for the first time now that representatives of these unions were calling on the Chief Minister in Chandigarh to express their gratitude for safeguarding the farmers’ interests. Farmer leaders including Hari Chand Khokhar, Shamsher Singh, Lal Chand Dhingra, Mange Ram, Ram Karan, Ram Chander and Bhupinder Singh Mehta presented shawls and turbans to Mr. Hooda and assured him that they would abide by his directives.

Irrigation Minister Ajay Singh Yadav, Anand Singh Dangi, MLA, Chief Minister’s Political Adviser Virender Singh, Media Adviser Sunder Pal and Crime and Vigilance Adviser Pardeep Punia were among those present.

Tributes to Indira Gandhi

Earlier, Mr. Hooda paid glowing tributes to late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her death anniversary at a function at the Haryana Congress office here. He said that it was under her leadership that India ushered in a new era of prosperity and the country’s prestige got further enhanced globally. He described the late Prime Minister as not only a great national leader but also one of the eminent international personalities. Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee president Phool Chand Mullana, Member of Parliament from Rohtak Deepinder Singh Hooda, and Member of Parliament Avtar Singh Bhadana were among those present.
