Conducting elections to vacant posts alone not advisable: chairman Committee dominated by Congress members ALAPPUZHA: The 17-member Ruling Committee of the Coirfed under the chairmanship of M.K. Abdul Gafoor resigned here on Wednesday. The outgoing committee forwarded a request to the State government to conduct fresh elections on February 20, 2008. According to Mr. Gafoor, the resignation of the committee, dominated by Congress party members, is not due to any political pressures or differences with the State government. “On the contrary, we are very much indebted to the State government and Coir Minister G. Sudhakaran for the help extended to us,” he said. Mr. Gafoor said the four posts that were lying vacant on the committee for quite some time prompted the resignation. “Conducting election to these posts alone is not advisable when the actual election is less than seven months away. That is why we decided to resign,” he told a press conference here on Wednesday. The outgoing committee had a lot of achievements to be proud about, he said, informing that the Coirfed would soon set up a modern PVC Tufted Machine to manufacture PVC tufted products that were in high demand in the international market. The machine would be established with the help of the State government. The committee, apart from being able to reduce the Coirfed’s outstanding debt and minimise corruption in its folds, had also managed to complete the Thachadi Memorial Coir Godown at Kanichukulangara.
