Says those who do not perform will find it difficult to continue in their posts Asks officials not to inflate statistics to show higher achievements HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy has asked the police to avoid using excessive force by way of firing and lathicharge to control crowds during agitations. Delivering the concluding remarks at the two-day Collectors’ conference on Wednesday, attended by top-brass of the police, including district Superintendents, Dr Reddy warned: “There should not be any repeat of Mudigonda,” a reference to the police firing in Khammam district that killed seven persons. Advise to policeThe Chief Minister also advised the police to avoid ill-treating people if they approached them with recommendations from MLAs and other elected representatives in their eagerness to solve their problems. “Instead, be humane and solve the problem”. He, however, asked them to be tough while dealing with Maoists and terrorists. Dr. Reddy said Collectors and SPs who did not perform well, would find it difficult to continue in their posts. Once again, he made no secret of his dissatisfaction over “the slow pace” of the implementation of his Government’s flagship programmes like Indiramma by saying that the progress was not up to the mark. He said the success of Collectors would be determined by quality of the delivery system in terms of reaching various benefits to the targeted sections. The Chief Minister said the decisions taken at meetings presided over by him should percolate down to the district level in two-to-three days. “Any delay will not be tolerated”, he declared in obvious reference to the two-month long delay by the Revenue Department in issuing orders to enhance compensation for lands acquired for housing. ‘Give a clear picture’The Collectors were asked not to inflate statistics to show higher achievements as “you did previously”, and to provide only a true picture to the Government to facilitate proper decision making. The Chief Minister announced that all societies attached to different departments running educational institutions for weaker sections, would be merged. Under this one umbrella, over 700 mega residential schools would be taken up at a cost of Rs 1,650 crores, each with a student strength up to 1,200. Earlier, he had one-to-one interaction with each Collector.
