State fulfilling duty to students: Baby

Special Correspondent

Additional Plus Two seats for Malabar are in government schools only

A direct response to region’s needs

Intake of students will start immediately

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Education Minister M.A. Baby said here that the Cabinet decision to provide more than 26,000 additional seats for Plus Two and Vocational Higher Secondary courses in the Malabar region this year itself was in direct response to the need thrown up by the situation in the region.

Addressing a press conference, Mr. Baby said even students who had passed the SSLC with ‘B Plus’ and superior grades were finding it difficult to gain admission in Higher Secondary courses in Malabar region.

The Government had earlier increased Higher Secondary seats by 20 per cent in all Government schools and Government-aided schools across the State.

Though this had eased the situation to a great extent, the Malabar districts of Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Malappuram and Palakkad district encountered the problem even this year. “The Government was fulfilling its responsibility to give all students the opportunity for higher education,” he said.

New batches

The additional seats sanctioned through Wednesday’s Cabinet decision are entirely in Government schools. Several High Schools will be upgraded to Higher Secondary schools and new batches will be started in several other Higher Secondary schools as per the decision.

Mr. Baby said the Cabinet had also given permission to the Education Department to sanction additional Higher Secondary and Vocational Higher Secondary batches in Model Residential Schools for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, if needed. The requirement in this regard was being evaluated, he said.

Students will be admitted to the newly sanctioned seats immediately. They will be given extra hours of teaching to bring them on a par with this year’s batch. The schools will appoint teachers on temporary basis for the time being.
