THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State government will honour poet O.N.V. Kurup with this year’s Ezhuthachan Award, its highest recognition in the field of literature. Minister for Cultural Affairs M.A. Baby visited the poet’s residence here on Wednesday to inform him of his selection for the award. The judging committee included Communist Party of India (Marxist) ideologue and writer P. Govinda Pillai, novelist M. Mukundan and poet Sugathakumari. Mr. Baby said the award would be presented to O.N.V. Kurup at a function at the Durbar Hall in the Secretariat in November. The award carries a purse of Rs.1 lakh, a plaque and a commemorative inscription. The poet, on receiving the news, said he felt honoured to be selected for the award in the name of the great poet Ezhuthachan, whose work, ‘Adhyatma Ramayanam,’ had instilled in him the love for poetry. To a question from a journalist whether he considered the recognition late in reaching him, he said: “Not at all. I do not have any such grievances.”
