Bangalore: The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), along with other workers’ unions, held a demonstration here on Wednesday demanding early enactment of two separate central legislation for the unorganised sectors workers and agricultural workers. In a memorandum submitted to the Karnataka Governor, the CITU has said that the legislations should encompass minimum wages, service conditions and other welfare measures. The Bill prepared by the Centre now concentred only on welfare measures, it added. The memorandum demanded fair implementation of wages agreement with the beedi workers of Karnataka and statutory protection for contract employees in the State. Workers employed in making beedis, garments, agarbatti, besides auto drivers and other poor people, should be given housing sites, the memorandum said. Many poor people have already submitted applications en masse to the Bangalore Urban Deputy Commissioner, the memorandum has pointed out. The CITU said that the State Government was yet to fix statutory minimum wages and it should follow the Delhi State example and fix it at the earliest, said K.N. Umesh, General Secretary, Bangalore District Committee of CITU. The protest was attended by construction workers, auto drivers, domestic helps, beedi workers and others.
