Seek fresh mandate: CPI(M)

Special Correspondent

JD(S)-BJP reunion termed ‘height of opportunism’

RSS accused of mediation to bring about the reunion

Bangalore: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) will launch a State-wide campaign on November 2 demanding that all political parties in Karnataka seek a fresh mandate.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, CPI(M) State secretary G.N. Nagaraj described the reunion of the Janata Dal (Secular ) and the Bharatiya Janata Party as the “height of opportunism.” People were fed up with the “sordid drama” being enacted in by the two parties and have lost faith in political parties, he said.

After breaking the alliance earlier, the two parties had showered abuses on each other and the same people had come together now with nothing but “greed for power,” Mr. Nagaraj said. “The communal agenda of the BJP, opportunism of Janata Dal (Secular) and irresponsibility of the Congress are responsible for today’s situation. Many MLAs are afraid of facing the people because they have lost people’s confidence. Any government which does not have the confidence of the people is anti-democratic,” he said.

Mr. Nagaraj accused the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) of mediating to bring about the reunion between the BJP and the Janata Dal (Secular). “This exposes the so-called moral high stance of the RSS,” he said. “After the collapse of BJP-Janata Dal (Secular) Government, BJP leaders announced that they will convert Bababudangiri into Datta Peetha. The Janata Dal (Secular) on the other hand said that the BJP had misused powers on the issues of Bababudangiri, communal violence in Mangalore and the attack on Karunanidhi’s daughter’s house in Bangalore,” he recalled. It is dangerous, he warned, if BJP takes over the posts of Chief Minister and Home Minister in the State.
