Lower courts directed to use Kannada

Staff Reporter

‘But ensuring Kannada is implemented fully will take time’

BANGALORE: The Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, Cyriac Joseph, on Wednesday said that a circular had been issued to all the subordinate courts asking them to conduct court proceedings as far as possible in Kannada.

He told presspersons here that the Full Court (an official meeting of all the judges ) of the high court had already passed a resolution to this effect.

All subordinate courts had been instructed to use Kannada, he said.

The Chief Justice was responding to queries by presspersons on a protest organised by some advocates in front of the High Court premises seeking implementation of Kannada in courts.

Judgments

He said all judicial officers could not write judgments in Kannada since they had to use highly technical and legal words. However, if a judicial officer was competent to write judgments in Kannada, he could do so and if an appeal against it was filed in the High Court, the judgement would have to be translated into English.

However, ensuring that Kannada was implemented fully in the subordinate courts would take time, he said.

‘Not against Kannada’

Both the Chief Justice and senior judge V. Gopala Gowda pointed out that English was the official language of high courts and the Supreme Court. They said that the high court was not against Kannada.
