BURNING ISSUE: Fire and Rescue Services personnel demonstrate how a fire extinguisher needs to be used while attempting to put out fire, at Lady Sivaswami Iyer Girls Higher Secondary School in Chennai on Tuesday.

CHENNAI: Students of the Sivaswami group of schools witnessed a demonstration of rescue operations by Fire and Rescue Services personnel here on Tuesday.

The event, organised by the Burns Association of India in association with Fire and Rescue Services, was aimed at creating awareness among children of the dangers of fire from crackers and resulting burns and of they could be prevented, Burns Association secretary K. Mathangi Ramakrishnan said. Retired professor of Madras Medical College D. Kamalakar Rao elaborated on the safety practices that needed to be adhered to in homes.

“It is not advisable to wear any fabric other than cotton while working in the kitchen. An apron will ensure additional safety for those wearing saris,” he said. He also emphasised the importance of periodic checking of tubes in cooking gas connections.

Dr. Rao urged students to refrain from using short incense sticks to light crackers.

“Another dangerous habit of children is to collect all crackers that did not burst in one area and light them along with the waste paper around. “This could be very dangerous,” he said.

Leading fireman (south wing) A. Bhagavan explained the different ways to put out fire, such as using water or blankets. He said it was important to spread awareness among youngsters.

The students, later, saw a demonstration of all techniques discussed.

As Additional Divisional Officer D. Namachivayam guided the personnel, they demonstrated how a victim caught in the first or second floor in a building on fire could be rescued.
