GUNTUR: Sixteen second year students of Bapatla Engineering College were arrested by the town police on Wednesday for allegedly assaulting fellow students over a seating row in the college bus.
According to the town police, the incident took place on October 10 evening, while the students were returning from the college.
Based on a complaint from N. Venugopala Rao, the police arrested the group of students led by K. Ramakrishna and paraded them on the streets on the way to the local municff court.
The police slapped cases under sections 143, 323, 341 and 506 (IPC). The magistrate remanded them to 14 days of judicial custody. Later, the students were released on bail.
The students were returning from the college, when the group of students led by Ramakrishna allegedly taunted the other students for occupying the front seats, resulting in a minor skirmish.
Later, the group assaulted the students near the e-Seva centre in Bapatla, resulting in injuries to Venugopala Rao and his friend.
Though a complaint was lodged on October 10 nights, the police took 21 days to arrest the accused. Bapatla Sub Inspector M. Srinivasa Rao said that action was delayed since the police had to collect addresses of the students and then there was a Dasara vacation.
