Dalits protest seeking justice

Special Correspondent

Demanding action: Dalits of Alahal village staging a dharna in Gulbarga on Wednesday.

GULBARGA: Dalits of Alahal village in Surpur taluk in Gulbarga district, under the leadership of the CPI (M) on Wednesday staged a dharna outside the office of the Deputy Commissioner here demanding, among other things, arrest of those accused in the complaint filed by the family of Parmanna, a farmer, who was found hanging in mysterious circumstances in an agricultural field on June 18.

Family members of Parmanna, including his wife and sons, also took part in the dharna seeking justice from the Government. In a memorandum addressed to Governor Rameshwar Thakur and submitted to the district authorities, the Dalits accused the police of trying to close the case. The memorandum said that even after more than four months after the death of Parmanna, the police had not arrested Gurannagouda Gugal, in whose field the body of Parmanna was found hanging. The family of Parmanna blamed Gugal and some others in the village for the death of Parmanna.

The memorandum pointed out that the police had not even questioned Gugal and others charged in the complaint filed by the family of Parmanna.

The police and the district administration had also failed to take action to end the unofficial social boycott imposed on Dalits by the upper castes in Alahal village since April 14 and nobody had been arrested for imposing the social boycott in the village.

Due to the delay on the part of the police to complete the investigation, the family of Parmanna had not received compensation from the State Government. Other Dalit families that were suffering due to the social boycott in the village should also be adequately compensated, it was demanded.

The memorandum said the police should also protect the Dalits in Alahal from attacks by the upper castes.
