The organisers declared the winners of mascot design and logo design competitions VISAKHAPATNAM: Hundreds of rare stamps greeted visitors to the 11th State Level Philatelic Exhibition (APPEX-2007). The philately exjhibition is being organised by the Postal Department at the Port Seetharama Kalyana Mandapam at Salagramapuram here. Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command Vice Admiral Raman P. Suthan, who participated as chief guest, described stamp collection as a hobby that was both enriching and educating. Stamps provide interesting details of history, details of prominent personalities, flora and fauna, animals and so on. The hobby also promotes friendship among people of different nations and bridges the gulf between generations. Rich traditionWhile stamp collection was the privilege of kings and leaders in ancient days, today anyone can take up the hobby. He released a special cover on ‘Star Tortoise’ and declared open APPEX-2007. Retired Secretary to the Government of India and Coordinator of the Forum for Better Visakha E.A.S. Sarma said that India had a rich tradition of stamps as early as in 3rd century BC which was evident from a reference to ‘stamping weights’ and ‘stamping on paper’ in Kautilya’s ‘Arthsashtra’. He underlined the need for India Post to go in for modernisation like issue of web-based stamps to prevent counterfeiting of stamps. Post Master General (Visakhapatnam Region) A.N.D. Kachari, PMG (Hyderabad Region) Usha Chandrasekhar, Director of Postal Services PVS Reddy participated. PrizesThe first prize in the ‘mascot’ design competition held as part APPEX-2007 was shared by Sampath Kumar and Sharon Geraldine Hastings of Kendriya Vidyalaya No.2, Nausenabaugh. The first prize in the ‘logo’ design competition went to Kavya Mrudula of Sri Prakash Vidya Niketan also from the city. The three-day expo will conclude on November 2.
