Insurance cover for students favoured Integrated welfare hostel coming up at Venigandla GUNTUR: Tadikonda MLA Dokka Manikya Vara Prasad has sought a 25 per cent hike in hostel mess charges of various BC, SC and ST welfare hostels in the State. He said at a press conference on Wednesday that he, along with like-minded MLAs, would shortly meet Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy. The issue would also be raised in the Assembly, he said. Lunch with inmatesThe MLA, along with Social Welfare Department Deputy Director Venkateswara Rao, officials of BC Welfare and ST Welfare had lunch with hostel inmates at the SC Welfare Hostel at Thulluru to mark the death anniversary of the former Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. While praising Chief Minister for effecting a 25 per cent increase in hostel mess charges in 2006, he said that he would take up issues of providing quality health care to hostel inmates by appointing a doctor, providing insurance cover to students and providing basic amenities in hostels. The Rs.2-a-kg rice scheme could also be extended to social welfare hostels, he said. Basic amenitiesThe SW Department, Guntur, had received Rs.1 crore grant from the State Government with which it would provide basic amenities like drinking water and undertake repairs of classrooms, he said. An integrated welfare hostel at Venigandla was being built at a cost of Rs.1.69 crores and tenders would be called shortly, he said.
