LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh Government on Wednesday fixed the State Advised Price (SAP) for sugarcane for the 2007-2008 crushing season. Giving this information, Chief Minister Mayawati said at a press conference here that the price of early maturing variety of cane had been fixed at Rs. 130 per quintal, common variety at Rs. 125 per quintal and for the third variety at Rs. 122.50 per quintal. The Chief Minister said the Government had provided a budgetary assistance of Rs.113 crore and a Government guarantee of Rs.200 crore. She said when her Bahujan Samaj Party came to power in May this year, Rs. 3005 crore was pending as sugarcane price arrears on mill owners, adding that the dues were on account of faulty policies pursued by the previous regime which did not take any initiative to clear the dues. Ms. Mayawati said that following directives given by her, Rs.1593 crore of the total arrears had been paid to the farmers during the last five months, which, she added, was 50 per cent of the cane dues. The Chief Minister said recovery notices have been issued to 64 private sugar mills for their failure to pay the cane dues. Ms. Mayawati urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to give a Rs.1875-crore interest-free loan to sugar mills.
