Varsity athletic meet: venue shifted to Chidambaram

KOCHI: The 68th all-India inter-university athletic championship, which was allotted to Kerala University a few months ago, has been shifted to Annamalai University and will now be held at Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu, from January 13 to 17.

The delay in getting Thiruvananthapuram’s University Stadium, where the synthetic track is to be relaid later this year, ready in time for the championship appears to be the reason behind the change.

A Tamil Nadu university would be hosting the meet for the second time in three years. Manonmaniam Sundaranar University had conducted the 66th edition in Tirunelveli early last year.

Rajilal stars for St. Paul’s College

Rajilal hit an unbeaten century (113, 43 b, 12x6, 6x4) as St. Paul’s College, Kalamassery, thrashed University College of Engineering (Thodupuzha) by 117 runs and entered the quarterfinals of the Mahatma Gandhi University North Zone inter-collegiate cricket championship at the St. Peter’s College, Kolencherry, on Wednesday.

The scores: St. Paul’s (Kalamassery) 227 for three in 20 overs (Rajilal 113 n.o., Abhishek Hegde 41) bt University CE (Thodupuzha) 110 for five in 20 overs.

Don Bosco enters semifinals

Don Bosco (Irinjalakuda) and Cherupushpam (Chandanakampara) entered the boys’ semifinals of the 22nd Fr Francis Sales all-Kerala inter-school basketball tournament at the Rajagiri floodlit basketball stadium, Kalamassery, on Wednesday.

In the girls’ section, Mount Carmel (Kottayam), Cherupushpam (Chandanakampara), Little Flower (Koratty) and Bhavan’s Vidya Mandir (Elamakkara) qualified for the semifinals after the league phase.

The results: Boys: Quarterfinals: Don Bosco 36 (Shebin Shamsudeen 14, Cyril 10) bt St. John The Baptist (Nedumkunnam) 20 (Joison 12); Cherupushpa 53 (Vineethkumar 22, Manu 10) bt SCS (Thiruvalla) 44 (Anil 20).

League: Don Bosco 41 (Shebin13) bt Rajagiri PS 20; Cherupushpam 46 (Sudeesh 10, Vineeth 14) bt MAM HS, Korratty 7; Rajagiri HSS 42 (Akash 13, Arun 10) bt SC Seminary 36 (Libin 19).

Thiruvananthapuram girls triumph

Thiruvananthapuram crushed Kozhikdoe by eight wickets to win the title in the junior women’s cricket tournament at the DB College ground in Sasthamcotta on Wednesday.

Thiruvananthapuram restricted Kozhikode to 88 in 25 overs and scored the required runs in the 22nd over.

The scores:

Final: Kozhikode 88 for eight in 25 overs (Rakhi four for 35) lost to Thiruvananthapuram 89 for two in 21.5 overs (Asha 48 n.o.).

Semifinal: Kozhikode 127 for three in 20 overs (Shani 59 n.o., Manju three for 29) bt Kollam 44 for four in 20 overs (Babitha three for 22).

SZ U-15 inter-State cricket from today

The South Zone under-15 inter-State cricket tournament will get underway in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday. The matches will be held at three venues — Medical College ground, Agriculture College ground and LNCPE ground. Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra, Hyderabad, Karnataka and Goa will take part in the tournament which will end on November 20.

Ratnakaran, Laxman score wins

Southern Railway’s top seed K. Ratnakaran and Tamil Nadu’s second seed R.R. Laxman were among the first-round winners in the Sunny Diamonds-RSC Open all-India FIDE-rated chess tournament at the Regional Sports Centre in Kochi on Wednesday.
