TIRUNELVELI: The Corporation plans to lay a 40-km-long pipeline to bring drinking water directly either from Manimuthar or Papanasam reservoirs to meet the future demand of Tirunelveli and surrounding areas. After the State Government paved the way for establishment of an information technology park at Gangaikondan near here and cleared the proposal for establishing assorted industries at the proposed hi-tech park at Nanaguneri, it is expected that thousands of skilled workforce and their dependents will settle down on the peripheries of the Corporation. The civic body is struggling to meet drinking water requirements owing to shortfall in supply from existing water sources. Rampant sand quarrying around infiltration wells in Tamirabarani and discharge of sewage from the houses and effluents from industrial houses into the river has worsened the quality of water being drawn. Sand mining has also affected natural filtration of water. Against this backdrop, the Corporation has decided to lay pipelines to bring water directly from Manimuthar or Papanasam dams, the major irrigation sources of the district, so as to get unpolluted water. “I will not say that it is an innovative proposal as Coimbatore is getting water directly from Siruvani dam and Madurai from Vaigai dam. Steps have already been taken to bring water from Mettur dam for Salem,” Mayor A.L. Subramanian told councillors at a recent meeting. Once the plan is ready, the Corporation can approach the Centre for funds.
