Lalu reiterates demand for Modi’s arrest
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo and Railway Minister Lalu Prasad on Wednesday met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and reiterated his demand that Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi be arrested in the wake of the Tehelka expose on the post-Godhra communal riots in 2002.
Mr. Prasad had demanded Mr. Modi’s arrest for the Chief Minister’s alleged connivance and complacency in letting the riots spread.
The Tehelka expose conclusively established “Mr. Modi’s role in the riots which left thousands dead,” the RJD delegation is understood to have told Dr. Singh.
‘Sufficient evidence’
The RJD leaders said the Tehelka tapes were sufficient evidence to book Mr. Modi under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code and place him and other alleged perpetrators of the communal carnage under arrest. They also demanded action against the former Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani, for allegedly shielding Mr. Modi.
Mr. Prasad was accompanied by some Union Ministers of the RJD, including Prem Gupta, Taslimuddin, Kanti Singh and J.P. Yadav.
He told journalists that the Tehelka sting operation vindicated his utterances on the riots. He said Dr. Singh gave the delegation a patient hearing and promised to look into the matter.
