We recognise his strong convictions on nuclear deal, says Karat Left ready to meet again if it would help arrive at some findings NEW DELHI: Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Prakash Karat has said that differences with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the India-U.S. civilian nuclear deal do not mean that “we do not have respect for the Prime Minister.” Hailing the Prime Minister’s “unquestioned integrity,” Mr. Karat disagreed with the suggestion that Dr. Singh should step down as he could not go ahead with the nuclear agreement. “There is no reason why the UPA government should not complete its full term,” he said in an interview to The Telegraph, Kolkata-based daily, which appeared on Wednesday. “It is true that there has been a basic difference in approach between the Prime Minister and the Left on the nuclear agreement. We recognise that he has strong convictions on the soundness and utility of the agreement,” he said. On the Left-UPA committee on the nuclear deal, which is due to meet on November 16, Mr. Karat said the Left was ready to meet again if it would help arrive at some findings.
CPI national secretary and MP, D. Raja, said the Left had never shown any disrespect to the Prime Minister. “We have always held him in high esteem and never questioned his integrity. The issue of nuclear deal is not one between the Prime Minister and the Left parties but it is something that concerns the country and its future, there we have our differences,” Mr. Raja told The Hindu.
