BANGALORE: The best of young minds worked overtime at the exhilarating regional final of the multi-city The Hindu Young World Quiz 2007 held here at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Bhavan on Wednesday. An involved, cheering audience witnessed a seesaw battle in which the Deadly Duo team from National Public School (NPS), Indiranagar, came from behind to beat the Pluto and Newton team from Delhi Public School (Bangalore North) by a wafer-thin margin of two points.

The NPS team of Arvind Dasgupta and Deepak Narayanan, which was trailing by four points at one point, garnered 18 points in the last shoot-to-glory round, pushing the DPS team of Dhruv Manchala and Vidur Niranjan to second place.

First time

An elated Arvind and Deepak, Grade 9 students, said they had reached the finals of a quiz competition for the first time though they confessed they were not too sure of even crossing the first hurdle — the preliminary round! “We comprehended the questions fast and hit the buzzer first in the last round. We knew we had won the quiz when we answered the penultimate question correctly,” a still-dazed Deepak said.

“We hadn’t prepared well for the regional final, and now we know that we have a huge task ahead to do well in the national final. Definitely, it is not going to be a cakewalk,” added Arvind modestly.

National final

They will represent Bangalore in the grand All-India National Final at Chennai on December 3. Both went home richer by Rs. 8,000 and received trophies from The Hindu as well as goodies from various sponsors, while Dhruv and Vidur took home a cash prize of Rs. 6,000 and trophies as well as gift hampers.

After the preliminary written round, six teams made it to the regional final on stage.

Best team

The team of Sonal Len Saldanha and Akshay Krishna from St. Joseph’s Boys’ High School was the second runner-up, while the teams from Sri Kumaran Public School (ICSE), Sudarshan Vidya Mandir (ICSE) and Carmel School, Padmanabhanagar, finished fourth, fifth and sixth respectively. The team Quiz Czarinas from Mirambika School for New Age won the Best Team Name prize, while the Eagles team from Vidya Jyothi School, Kolar, won the Best Outstation Team prize.
