KOCHI: The stone laying function of the proposed Smart City project will be held on November 13, District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish has said. “The stone for the four-lane highway originating from the Seaport-Airport Road and which will serve as a dedicated link to the Smart City will also be laid on the same day,” he said. The Collector said here on Wednesday that Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan would attend the function. However, his participation was yet to be confirmed, he said. He said that work on putting in place the arrangements for the function was in full swing despite the protests by the landowners of the six acres, earmarked for acquisition and which has also been identified as the venue of the function. One of the main demands of the 50-odd landowners of the six acres near Infopark is that their land should be exempted from the acquisition process on the ground that it would deny them access to Kadamprayar and Edachira canal, their traditional sources of water, and to the Masjid-Bund Road. However, the Collector said that there was no question of exempting their land from acquisition. It is also to reinforce this message that the function is being organised in that land, he said. But he maintained that the complaints lodged by the landowners were being looked into. The landowners, under the aegis of landowners protest committee, had been staging indefinite satyagraha in front of Infopark since Tuesday for a favourable decision from the authorities.
