MADURAI: Tension gripped Government Rajaji Hospital premises on Wednesday following the death of a schoolteacher who was allegedly attacked at Mudukulathur on Tuesday.

Members of Devendra Kula Velalar community staged a demonstration in front of the mortuary demanding the arrest of the accused and compensation for the family of the deceased.

A. Vincent Samson (36), a teacher at the Periya Ilai Panchayat Union Primary School, sustained grievous injuries when a group of unidentified persons attacked him with lethal weapons.

V. Sakunthala, wife of the deceased, accused the authorities of not obtaining her consent for the postmortem. She demanded justice for her husband’s death and sought compensation and a government job.

Leading the agitation, State leader of Bahujan Samaj Party K. Murugavel Rajan demanded immediate arrest of the assailants involved in the gruesome attack and wanted a government representative to hold talks with them.

The agitators were arrested on the orders of Commissioner of Police K. Nandabalan. Later, the body was taken to Mudukulathur.
