Video film fete signs off

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The curtains came down on Signs 2007, the third international video film festival organised by the Federation of Film Societies of India, here on Wednesday.

Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac inaugurated the valedictory function. Jury chairman Kumar Shahani distributed prizes to the films that won the John Abraham national award. Jury member T.K. Rajeev Kumar presented the committee’s report. V.K. Joseph, southwest regional president of the Federation of Film Societies of India, presided over the function. Lenin Rajendran and Beena Paul were present.

‘Bhultir Khero’ (Chronicle of an Amnesiac), directed by Anirban Datta, was adjudged the best documentary. The jury selected the film for its brilliant and deeply reflective portrayal of the amnesia that a great historical city is falling into. ‘Vellappokathil’ (In the Deluge), directed by Jayaraj, bagged the award for the best short fiction for its innovative use of the medium to translate the spirit of a great literary work.

Emmanuel Quindo Palo’s work titled ‘Trip’ won the award for the best student video. The film was chosen for its simple, yet lively and powerful visualisation of a ubiquitous problem.

The award for the cinema of resistance went to ‘Mahua Memoirs’ by Vinod Raja. The jury termed the film a well- researched visual and human document that brought into view the panoramic vision of the plight of the marginalised in the third world.

‘Our Family,’ directed by K.P. Jayashankar and Anjali Montario, won the special mention of the jury in the documentary section, while ‘Sethu,’ by Sanghamitra and Shyamal Karmakar, bagged the award in the short fiction category. ‘Mom N Dad,’ by Nina Panemanglor, S.R. Yashawini and Kavitha Carneiro, got a special jury mention for the best student video and ‘Goddesses’ by Leena Manimekhalai got the special mention award for cinema of resistance.
