Congress members stage novel protest at Thuraiyur council

Staff Reporter

Demand drinking water supply, provision of streetlights in their wards

MAKING A POINT: Congress councillors with a mosquito net, a burning torch and a pot at the council in Thuraiyur on Wednesday.

TIRUCHI: Three Congress members of the Thuraiyur Municipal Council staged a novel protest at the council hall here on Wednesday to press their demand for provision of civic amenities in their wards.

Even as Chairperson Bhoopathy, who presided over the meeting, was about to take up the proceedings, the councillors sprang a surprise by entering the hall, urging the officials and the Chairperson to concede their demands. They clarified that they had to resort to the protest as their oft-repeated pleas had fallen on deaf ears. They demanded drinking water supply, provision of streetlights and anti-mosquito drive in their wards.

Councillors S. Geetha, S. Lakshmi and M. Adhinathan Rajan also resorted to a sit-in stir by squatting on the floor of the hall for about an hour, condemning the “serious delay” in providing the amenities.

While the women councillors came with a pot, a burning torch and an old lantern, M. Adhinathan Rajan covered himself with a mosquito net. However, they took their seats after DMK councillor R. Manoharan pleaded with the Chairperson and the officials to take immediate action.

The council witnessed intermittent noisy scenes when a number of councillors voiced their concern over inadequate supply of drinking water.

M. Sudhakar (DMK) said that although new pipe lines had been laid in his ward about a month ago, the supply was yet to be provided. He wondered how the authorities effected payment to the contractor.

S. Rajeswari (DMK) sought immediate action for the supply of drinking water in her ward.

When D. Rajendran (Independent) complained that there was delay in sanctioning the assistance under the ‘Muthulakshmi Reddy Memorial Maternity Assistance’ scheme, Commissioner S. Ayyappan said about 300 applicants were awaiting the assistance for the last seven months. The assistance would be disbursed after the funds were released.
