Four diploma programmes in tourism and hotel industry introduced

TIRUCHI: With a view to tapping the abundant job opportunities in tourism and hotel industry, the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Career Development (IECD), Bharathidasan University, and Jenneys Academy of Tourism and Hotel Management have entered into a tie-up to offer four diploma programmes for aspiring candidates with a minimum qualification of standard VIII in the age group of 15 to 35.

Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University M. Ponnavaikko and academy director Ponnilango signed a memorandum of understanding on Wednesday in the presence of ICED Director K. Parthasarathy, Controller of Examinations Balasubramanian and managing trustee of the academy A. Joseph Francis.

4-month courses

The four-month programmes in Food Production, Housekeeping, Food and Beverage Services and Bakery and Confectionary will start from November in the off-campus mode. The second batch will be admitted in May next. Each programme with an intake of 30 students will be conducted in two shifts at the Academy.

The university and the academy plan to conduct the programmes for 1,000 rural youth in four batches within the initial two-year validity period of the MoU. The placement for the programmes will be cent percent and students can find jobs beyond Tamil Nadu and even abroad, the Vice-Chancellor said after signing the MoU. The four-month training includes a month of hands-on-exposure in select hotels.

According to Jenneys Academy, which is approved by the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi, and the Directorate of Technical Education, Chennai, for offering courses in hotel management and catering technology.

During 2006, 4.4 million tourists visited India accounting for an earning of Rs. 29,603 crore in foreign exchange.

The requirement of trained employees in approved hotels is around 94,000 in the next five years. At present, 54 per cent of the employees are trained and the rest need formal qualification. The MoU is in the direction of bridging the gap.

The fee structure: Food Production - Rs. 10,000, Housekeeping- Rs. 5,000, Food and Beverage Services-Rs. 6,500, Bakery and Confectionary- Rs. 7,500.
