BANGALORE: The Karnataka Sugama Sangeetha Academy will hold a demonstration in front of Ravindra Kalakshetra on Suvarna Katrnataka Rajyotsva Day to protest against the Government’s decision to “dercognise” Sugama Sangeetha and amateur theatre from the Rajyotsava awards from the traditional 21 categories of the awards. Academy chairman Y.K. Muddukrishna told The Hindu here on Wednesday that the Government had deliberately ignored the deserving talents in the field of sugama sangeetha and amateur theatre for facilitating additional names in the other categories. The Shivarudrappa Committee, which had submitted the recommendation list to the Government, had included the two categories in question. But two senior Congress leaders allegedly meddled with the list for accommodating the names of their choice, he alleged. “Derecognising two cultural categories with ulterior purposes in the absence of the elected Government would amount to insulting the respective faculties and people associated with them and denying their cultural rights.” Hundreds of musicians and artists would participate in the black flag demonstration on Thursday in front of the Kalakshetra, where Governor Ramehswar Thakur would present the Rajyotsava awards, he said. Besides being an acclaimed singer, Mr. Muddukrishna was the former Director of Kannada and Culture for two terms and played an instrumental role in the construction of Kannada Bhavana. He had headed the Rajyotsava award selection committee five times. Announcing the awards on Monday the Secretary to Kannada and Culture I.M. Vittal Murthy had admitted there were some significant changes between the names recommended by the Shivarudrappa Committee and the approved list. He had said that the committee was only a recommendatory body and the final say was the prerogative of the Governor. On “derecognising” the awards in the categories of light music and amateur theatre Mr. Vittal Murthy said as a matter of policy the Government could restrict the number of awards to 51.
