DINDIGUL: A total of 1.31 lakh rural poor labourers, mostly women, are getting employment everyday in the district through National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme, which was designed to provide succour to the most vulnerable sections. “Rural women are the major beneficiaries,” said Collector P. Amudha. Talking to media persons after inspecting various development works taken up under National Rural Employment Guarantee schemes at Thavasimadai village in Sanarpatti Union on Wednesday, she said 1.81 lakh labourers have registered their names under this scheme so far. A total of 1,730 development works had been sanctioned at a cost of Rs.74.80 crore this year of which 80 works were completed. Wages to the tune of Rs.46.68 crore were also disbursed till date, she added. When a group of women protested over the conversion of community hall into library at the village under All Village Anna Renaissance Scheme, Ms. Amudha assured to construct a new community hall shortly. A total of 1,310 development works creating infrastructure such as rural roads, library, playground and community were completed in 62 villages and the rest of 714 works will be over by January 2008, she added. To a question on removal of encroachments, she announced that encroachments in Dindigul would be evicted on November 13. Palani received the highest rainfall this month followed by Kodaikanal and Dindigul. Damage of crops and roads was being assessed in the district. Village Administrative Officers were directed to take stock of the situation.
