MADURAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi declared open a memorial of ‘Parithimar Kalaignar’ (V.G. Suryanarayana Sastri) at Vilacheri here on Wednesday. The house of the Tamil scholar, who gave the first call to declare Tamil a classical language more than hundred years ago, has been converted into a memorial by the State Government.
Mr. Karunanidhi, accompanied by Ministers and officials, went around the old house that was renovated at a cost of around Rs.11 lakh. He also unveiled a statue of Parithimar Kalaignar who is also referred to as ‘Dravida Sastri.’
He died at a young age of 33 in 1903 by which time he had authored several books.
