CHENNAI: The Singapore-based Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy has expressed its interest in offering short-term certified courses in public management in educational institutions in Tamil Nadu so as to create inspiring leaders who can bring about good governance. “In the last 10 years, the Asian countries have emerged stronger. As the economies of Asian countries continue their rapid growth and development, the challenge would be to keep pace with the new realities created by rapidly globalising economies,” Stavros Yiannouka, vice-dean, Executive Education and Development, Lee Kuan Yew School, told The Hindu on Wednesday. Mr. Yiannouka visited the Anna Institute of Management, whose mission was to emerge as centre of excellence in management development for the State Government. “We are planning to introduce short-term certified courses for those in Tamil Nadu in specific areas of public management. The talks with AIM officials are in preliminary stages and we wish the course might commence by 2008,” he said. The Lee Yew School of Public Policy is an autonomous graduate school of the National University of Singapore. It offers master degree programmes in public policy, public administration and public management and a Doctor of Philosophy programme. Speaking at an interactive session on “Leadership & Governance,” organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Mr. Yiannouka said the school wanted to provide good access to future policymakers and policy leaders so that they could make prudent and effective decisions in public interest and within the context of their societies and culture.
