Kolkata: With the aim to strive for alternative, pro-poor and pro-women policies, the 8th National Conference of the All India Democratic Women’s Association will begin here on Thursday, 17 years after it was last held in the city. For the next four days, 956 delegates representing 22 States in the country will be deliberating on issues ranging from confronting imperialist globalisation, defending secular rights of women against the fundamentalist threat and asserting equality in the face of gender discrimination. The organisation, which has successfully struggled and intervened to prevent violence against women, caste and racial problems as well as the food crises, has more than one crore members at present. “We have fought against the intense caste problems and the two-glass system in Tamil Nadu, on behalf of Dalit women in Sabarimala, for women’s empowerment through Panchayats and Self Help Groups and their representation in the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act,” said Shyamali Gupta, the working president.
