Indians do well at Asian GP

KOLKATA: The Indian archery contingent, which participated in the third Asian Grand Prix at Isfahan in Iran recently, returned with a rich haul of five gold, two silver and one bronze medal.

The gold medals came in the men’s recurve team and individual (Rahul Banerjee, Mangal Singh (ind.) and Rajiv Basumatary), women’s recurve team and individual (Dola Banerjee, Chekrovolu Swuro and L. Bombayla Devi (ind.) and men’s compound individual (Isaiah R. Sanam).

The silver medals were won in men’s recurve individual (Rahul Banerjee) and compound men’s team (Sanam, L. Haridas and Sumit K. Mishra).

The lone bronze came through the women’s compound team (Jhanu Hansdah, Bheigyabati Chanu and Sumanlata Murmu).

The early elimination of Dola Banerjee, fourth in the World Cup rankings, was a big disappointment.

The 27-year-old will be the only Indian in the fray in this year’s World Cup final in Dubai on November 24.

Dola, who finished fifth in the GP qualifier, lost in the second round after getting a bye in the first knock-out stage. — Special Correspondent
