India rallies to hold Iraq

NEW DELHI: India sparkled in the final 10 minutes and came back from a two-goal deficit to hold Iraq to a 2-2 draw in its Group ‘C’ encounter of the AFC under-16 football championship qualification match in Dammam on Tuesday.

The result raised India’s hopes of qualifying from the group with matches remaining against Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Bhutan.

Al Nuami opened the scoring for Iraq in the 29th minute as the Indians trailed 0-1 at half-time in the match played at the Prince Mohammed Bin Fahad Stadium. Ahmed Marid increased the lead in the 50th minute.

ikramjit Singh, a midfielder from the Chandigarh Football Academy and trained by former international Harjinder Singh, scored in the 80th minute.

Tanmoy Ghosh, a promising youngster from Bengal, levelled the score seven minutes later.

India next plays Lebanon on November 1.
