Thiruvananthapuram
Thiruvananthapuram: The three-day visit of President Pratibha Patil to the capital city has seen elaborate security and traffic arrangements made by the police. The city witnessed several rounds of rehearsals from the airport to the Raj Bhavan, the Central Stadium and the beach resort of Kovalam to ensure smooth movement of the Presidential motorcade. Potholes on roads through which Mrs. Patil was to travel were filled, tubelights installed along the Chaka-Kovalam bypass and traffic islands painted for the VVIP visit. In a matter of days, the fencing of the transformer of the Kerala State Electricity Board near the University headquarters at Palayam was removed to ensure smooth movement of traffic near the Asan Square. The police took extra precautions to ensure that the motorcade did not have any confusion about the route as had happened during the visit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Nylon ropes were tied on several stretches to ensure that the drivers of the motorcade took the correct route. Ropes were tied near the Martyr’s Column and the War Memorial before the arrival of the motorcade.
