Chitradurga: The district celebrated Rajyotsava in a grand manner here on Thursday.

In a special programme organised at the Old Government School ground, hundreds of people, including schoolchildren, participated.

Addressing the gathering after unfurling the national flag, zilla panchayat Chief Executive Officer and in-charge Deputy Commissioner H.P. Prakash recalled the contribution of several leaders who fought for the unification of Karnataka.

He lamented that certain voices were demanding the formation of separate States, which would divide Karnataka.

“We must never let the struggle of those leaders who fought for the unity of the State go to waste,” he said.

Welcomed

In his address, G.H. Tippareddy, MLA, expressed happiness that the Supreme Court had dismissed the petition filed by the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti demanding the merger of Marathi-speaking areas of the State with Maharashtra.

He said that the State had contributed a lot in various fields to the progress and development of the nation.

“Despite this the State is lagging behind in the education sector and a lot needs to be done to improve this crucial sector,” he said.

Sultan (painting), Vasudev Murthy (photography), Srinivas (journalism), Mallanna (social work), K.B. Palayya (education), R.T. Chandrashekar (medicine), and N.D. Geeta (sports).

Five officials working in various government departments were honoured with the Civil Service Award on the occasion.

Dasappa, education officer K.P. Lohiteshwar Reddy, first division assistant in the Deputy Commissioner’s office Mohammad Samiullah and gram panchayat secretary R. Krishnamurthy.
