Procession, awards presentation mark the celebrations in Bellary

Five officials were presented with the Civil Service Award



Extravaganza: Cultural troupes performing during the Rajyotsava celebrations in Bellary on Thursday.

BELLARY: A colourful procession with the portrait of the goddess Bhuvaneshwari through the main streets of the city and presentation of the Civil Service Award marked the 51st Rajyotsava celebrations in Bellary on Thursday.

Deputy Commissioner Arvind Srivastav unfurled the national flag and performed puja to the portrait of the goddess. He also flagged off the procession from the Municipal School grounds. Hundreds of children from various schools participated in the procession. Cultural troupes performed “Veeragase” and played “Tasha rum dhol”. Boys from the Mariswamy Math exhibited their skills with the “lathi”.

Awards

Chornur Kotrappa, Assistant Director of Kannada and Culture; T.Y. Srinivas, Joint Director of Agriculture; S.M. Ramashetty, Health Officer; Yashoda, nurse; and M.A. Ashok of the Revenue Department were the five persons presented with the Civil Service Award for 2007. The award included a citation and a purse of Rs. 10,000.

Pushparekha, president of the zilla panchayat, felicitated the award winners.

G. Somashekar Reddy, councillor and president of the district unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party; S.J.V. Mahipal, former Chairman of the Bellary Urban Development Authority; and Amrit Paul, Superintendent of Police, were those present.

Several cultural programmes were held at the Dr. Joladarashi Doddanagowda Rangamandir in which children from several schools performed.
