Colourful: A procession being taken out in Hassan on Thursday as part of Rajyotsava celebrations. HASSAN: Hassan looked festive on Thursday as hundreds of school and college students took out a colourful procession carrying the portrait of the goddess Bhuvaneswari. Deputy Commissioner K.H. Aswathanarayana Gowda unfurled the national flag on the eve of the 51st Rajyotsava celebrations. The procession included tableaux prepared by various government departments. Students of Venkateswara PU College staged a depiction of the freedom movement while students of SPM PU College and Basavarajendra English Medium School enacted Kittur Rani Chennamma’s valiant fight against the British. The procession started from the Government High School grounds, went through the main roads in the city and returned to the Government High School grounds. Addressing the public, Mr. Gowda remembered the services of those who had sacrificed their lives for the unification of Karnataka. It was their selflessness that made unification a reality, he said. Achievers from different fields were felicitated. They included V. Narahari (literature), H.S. Prabhakar (journalism), Arjun M.V. (sports), Suresh Guruji (social service), Nanjunda Mym (theatre), Doddalli Ramesh (culture) and D.N. Krupa (child artiste). Zilla panchayat president C.N. Balakrishna; S.M. Anand, MLC; Superintendent of Police Panduranga Rane; zilla panchayat Chief Executive Officer F.R. Jamaadar; Joint Director of Agriculture Mahesh Gowda; and other district-level officers were also present. Cultural programmes were held at Kala Mandir in the evening.
