Jobs provided to 33,127 families under NREGS 11.32 lakh man-days created under the scheme DAVANGERE: Deputy Commissioner M.B. Dyaberi on Thursday said torrential rain had caused widespread damage in the district. Addressing the official function to mark Rajyotsava Day here, he said that the total losses in the district owing to rain were estimated at Rs. 86.59 crore. Rain lossTwenty people lost their lives and over 6,072 houses were damaged. Crops on 20,185 hectares of land were destroyed. “Nada geethe” was not sung during the celebrations and Kannada flags were not widely displayed in the stadium where the celebrations were held. The tradition of hoisting both the national flag and the Kannada flag was also not followed this year. The Deputy Commissioner recalled the contributions of many Kannada poets and writers, including B.M. Srikantaiah, J.P. Rajarathnam, Sa. Li. Ramachandra Rao. Mr. Dyaberi said that the district administration proposed to develop tanks in Jagalur and Harpanahalli at a cost of around Rs. 15 crore. Procurement centresHe said that Rs. 88 crore had been sanctioned to the Davangere City Corporation under the Integrated Small and Medium Town Development Scheme of which Rs. 33 crore had been released. Nine procurement centres had been set up in different places in the district to purchase maize at Rs. 620 a quintal. The Government had sanctioned Rs. 24.11 lakh as compensation to 351 sugarcane farmers in 33 villages who could not get their crop crushed. Mr. Dyaberi said that jobs had been provided to over 33,127 families under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and 11.32 lakh man-days had been created spending an amount of Rs. 13.78 crore under the scheme. Superintendent of Police Ravindra Prasad, Chief Executive Officer of the Davangere Zilla Panchayat Nijalingappa, Commissioner of the Davangere City Corporation Prana Linga Shivasali, Headquarters Assistant to the Deputy Commissioner Bettasurmath, Assistant Commissioner Janaki and other district officers were present on the occasion. Several schoolchildren participated in different cultural activities on the occasion.
