“Education Minister has agreed to consider the plea at the earliest” PUDUCHERRY: Industries and Power Minister V. Vaithilingam on Thursday said that the government was considering opening a branch of Pondicherry Engineering College at Nettapakkam. Presiding over the inaugural function of a five-day skill management training programme for women at Nettapakkam, the Minister said he had taken up the issue with the Education Department. Education Minister M.O.H.F Shahjahan had agreed to consider the plea as early as possible, Mr. Vaithialingam added. The construction work of an Industrial Training Institute at Nettapakkam was nearing completion. The institute, being constructed at a cost of Rs 2.5 crore, would be inaugurated in the next three months, he said. Mr. Vaithialingam said the government had planned to establish micro-industrial units at commune panchayat-level in the Union Territory. Local people would be encouraged to start small industrial units such as automobile repairing workshops and manufacturing units for making components used in agricultural sector, he said. The project had been conceptualised mainly to promote the activities of self-help groups, he added.
