Jumbo-hit ryots to get compensation

VIZIANAGARAM: Chief Minister Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy has assured compensation for the crops damaged by wild elephants in the Parvathipuram revenue division, Minister for Forests S. Vijayarama Raju has said.

Condoling six deaths occurred due to attacks by the rogue elephants, the Minister said that Rs. 1 lakh for each bereaved family was already paid. He said that the ‘Operation Gaja’ to drive the animals back into Lakheri Wildlife Sanctuary in Orissa was on.

Speaking after unfurling the National Flag on the occasion of A.P. State Formation Day celebrations at Police Grounds here on Thursday, Mr. Vijayarama Raju detailed the welfare activities launched by the Rajasekhara Reddy Government during the last three and half years. He said that Peddagedda and Jhanjhavathi irrigation projects were nearing completion and water would be released to 36,640 acres. He said repairs to several minor irrigation tanks such as Gummadi Gedda, Kanchera Gedda, Vanakabadi Gedda, Gurla Gedda etc were in progress.

Paddy procurement

The Minister said that for the first time paddy procurement was handed over to mahila samakhyas at Jami, Badangi, Cheepurupalli, Vepada, Bhogapuram and Parvathipuram. These centres were in addition to 53 outlets opened elsewhere in the district. The Minister said that the Government had sanctioned 1.25 lakh houses in the second phase of ‘Indiramma’ programme. The Minister said that a sum of Rs. 16 crores was sanctioned under ‘Pasu Kranti’ scheme for the benefit of SCs/STs and also sanctioned milk chilling centres at Garividi, S.Kota, Gajapathinagaram, Poosapatirega, Bobbili, Salur, Parvathipuram, China Merangi and Kurupam villages. The Minister said that 2,180 acres of land would be distributed among farm labour in the fourth phase.
