BHOPAL: A writ petition filed in the Supreme Court by the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Jamuna Devi, seeking to invoke the Court’s powers under Article 32 of the Constitution for an enquiry by an independent agency into alleged “amassing of properties” by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan’s wife has been listed for Friday. The petition was mentioned in the Supreme Court last Monday by the petitioner’s advocate Vivek Tankha. He underlined the “urgency of the matter” stating that there was a constitutional crisis in Madhya Pradesh. He told the Court that the State Lokayukta, who is a former Chief Justice and hence a judicial authority, has been served with a show-cause notice of breach of privilege by the Assembly Speaker. In her petition, Ms. Jamuna Devi has stated that after she filed a complaint with the Lokayukta seeking a probe into purchase of some heavy vehicles by Mr. Chauhan’s wife as well as “undue favours” granted to a private concern, three complaints were made against the Lokayukta by four ruling Bharatiya Janata Party MLAs. Subsequently, acting upon these complaints, the Speaker had issued a breach of privilege notice to the Lokayukta after a case was registered by him against administrative officials of the Assembly.
