THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy has urged the State government to pay Rs.15 lakh as compensation to the family of M.C. Elias, assistant sub-inspector of police who was killed during the student clash at the Changanassery NSS Hindu College recently. In a letter to Minister for Home Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, Mr. Chandy wanted the State government take up the educational expenses of the three children of the late police officer. The government had announced a compensation of Rs.6 lakh and the Left Democratic Front quarters were propagating this amount as a huge financial assistance. The police officer was killed while performing his duties and this was the first time that such an incident took place during student clashes, particularly when the students’ organisation owing allegiance to the ruling party was involved. Mr. Chandy pointed out that the government had paid a compensation of Rs.10 lakh when a prisoner was killed in Kannur Jail recently. Similarly, the government had paid compensation worth Rs.13 lakh to the mother of Udaya Kumar who was tortured to death in police custody.
