celebration time: Jignash (front) and Sai Akhil of Vijayawada display on Thursday the medals they won at the Sub-Junior National Level Archery Championship at Jabalpur recently. VIJAYAWADA: Living up to the expectations of archery administrators, two young archers of the city reaped a rich harvest of medals in the sub-junior national archery championship that concluded at Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh on October 30. Jignash, a student of Class XI at Gowtham Public School, went on to win the individual Olympic round gold medal (110/120) and helped AP win the team gold in the compound segment. In total, Andhra Pradesh archers won four gold, three silver and two bronze medals. “Young Jignash of the Volga Archery Academy won four gold medals, a silver medal and a bronze medal in the compound segment,” said Ch. Satyanarayana, vice-president of the Andhra Pradesh Archery Association, who accompanied the team as manager. Sweet revengeAP archers upped their performances gradually and set up the title clash with Jharkhand in the final by notching up 225 points out of 240. “It was a revenge of sort, as Andhra boys finished third in the last edition. It is really a noteworthy feat by our boys, as they outplayed Jharkhand which has been the undisputed champion for 10 years,” Mr. Satyanarayana pointed out. Jignash won gold medals in the 60-metre and 30-meter events, while silver medal and bronze medal were won in the 50-metre and 70-metre categories, respectively. Crucial time“Next year will be crucial for Jignash, as he will be taking part in the 14th World Cadet Archery Championship and also in the 10th World Junior Archery Championship, both scheduled to be held at New Delhi. I’m sure, this young lad will win medals in these international meets too. But, the immediate goal of Jignash is to do well in the junior national archery championship to be held at Amravati (Maharashtra) from November 18 to 22,” coach Ch. Lenin said. Sai Akhil, a Class X student of Bhashyam Public School, also played an important role in the team championship triumph.
