TO THE FORE: Members of Stree Shakti self-help groups taking part in a procession to mark Rajyotsava in Hubli on Thursday. HUBLI: It was virtually a show of “stree shakti” at the Rajyotsava celebrations in Hubli on Thursday. Many enthusiastic members of stree shakti self-help groups came out to participate in the procession held as part of the Rajyotsava. Holding the banner of their self-help group, women marched from the Siddharoodh Math to the Nehru Maidan, the concluding point. And, it was easy to distinguish members of one self-help group from another as members of each group wore saris of their group. As a result, the procession was colourful with each self-help group having a different “uniform”. Although the procession was colourful, it was not as grand compared to last year’s celebration. Barring a few, there were not many folk troupes taking part in the procession. There were only a few troupes which mainly played music. “Kudure kunita” and “dollu kunita” troupes were the only ones that attracted the attention of the onlookers. In the absence of a popular Government, not many political leaders were seen during the procession. Last year, many members of the Legislature had taken part in the procession and had covered the entire stretch on foot. This year, only a few faces were seen. However, more than a dozen tableaux succeeded in attracting the attention of the public. There was Goddess Bhuvaneshwari sitting on a specially designed chariot mounted on a North West Karnataka Road Transport Corporation vehicle. Sri Vidyaranya accompanied by Hakka and Bukka, Kittur Rani Chennamma, Onake Obavva, Sri Krishna Devaraya, Basaveshwara, Tipu Sultan and Gandhiji were part of the procession. Apart from these tableaux, the Hubli Dharwad Municipal Corporation had arranged tableaux of its solid waste management programme and the vermi-compost programme. It took almost three hours for the procession to reach the concluding point.
