dated November 2, 1957: Small-scale industries

The International Labour Office has expressed the view that “in principle small industry seems to fit into the economic and social conditions of most Asian countries better than large-scale production”. In a report on the social and economic, problems of small and handicraft industries prepared for the forthcoming fourth Asian Regional Conference to be held in Delhi from November 13 to 26, the ILO has expressed concern over the social and economic implications of the increasing competition by modern forms of factory production in the traditionally small and handicraft industries in Asia. Referring to the conditions in Asia in the form of inadequate land resources to ensure full employment of the vast labour force and limited capital, the review commends small-scale industries and believes “more extensive enquiries in the field might be particularly rewarding”.
